Thala is an independent, locally owned eco resort on a private headland at Oak Beach in Tropical Far North Queensland. Its 75 timber bungalows and suites sit within about 58 hectares of native forest above a secluded beach. Guests have access to walking tracks, two swimming pools, private beach access and complimentary guided activities, and can dine at Ospreys Restaurant, winner of a 2025 Chef's Hat award. Can I stay at Thala and visit both the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest?
Yes. Thala is positioned between the two, 15 minutes south of Port Douglas. Most Great Barrier Reef tours and Daintree Rainforest tours departing Port Douglas offer pickup and drop-off at Thala. After a day out, guests return to the resort to swim, walk the reserve or have dinner at Ospreys.
Booking reef and rainforest tours in advance is recommended. The reservations team can send recommendations and make bookings on your behalf.
What accommodation does Thala offer?
Every bungalow and suite is individually positioned in the forest on the headland. Bungalows are studio style, about 45 square metres including the balcony, with a king bed (twin configuration on request) and a bathroom with a separate bath and walk-in shower. Rooms are not self-contained. Where you stay on the headland determines the view.

What is in the rooms?
Jungle Walk and Eucalypt Bungalows have a private balcony, air-conditioning, ceiling fan, free-to-air TV, DVD player, minibar fridge, tea and coffee kettle, safe, hairdryer and iron. Coral Sea Bungalows add bathrobes and slippers. Suites have a large private balcony, and the Birdwing and Kingfisher Suites include a microwave and full-size fridge. Free WiFi is available in the main lodge and the bungalows.
Can families stay?
Yes. Guests of all ages are welcome. The Kingfisher Suite sleeps four. One rollaway bed (children up to 12, $50 per night) can be added to any bungalow or suite, and cots for children up to 2 are free.

One tour is offered most days and the schedule changes weekly; guests sign up on arrival. More than 200 bird species have been recorded on the reserve since opening, and wallabies and lace monitor lizards are common. Where do guests eat?
Ospreys Restaurant is on site in the treetops, overlooking the Coral Sea, and won a 2025 Chef's Hat award. It serves an a la carte menu daily. Dress code is smart casual, and there is a children's menu for children up to 12.

Resort guests always have space but are asked to book lunch and dinner. Bookings are essential for visitors who are not staying at the resort, who cannot use the pools or on-site tours. Dietary requirements and allergies should be given at the time of booking because of the remote location. Thala is 16 km (about 15 minutes) south of Port Douglas and 54 km from Cairns Airport on the Captain Cook Highway. A hire car is recommended but not essential. Free parking is provided for resort and restaurant guests, and a 24-hour golf buggy service runs guests between their room and the lodge.

Can I swim at Thala?
The resort has two swimming pools, which are not heated. Guests are advised to be cautious around all waterways and beaches because of North Queensland wildlife, and to swim only at patrolled beaches or in the pools.
